About RISEC

What is RISEC?

Given that the population of Canada continues to age and fertility is below the population replacement level, today immigration is the main driver of population growth. If these trends continue, based on Statistics Canada’s recent population projections, immigrants could represent from 29.1% to 34.0% of the population of Canada by 2041. (Source: Statistics Canada)

The Challenges Newcomers Face

One of the initial hurdles newcomers encounter is the process of adapting to a new culture. Canada's cultural mosaic, though celebrated, can be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with its intricacies. From language differences to social norms, navigating the nuances of Canadian culture requires time and support.

Securing meaningful employment is often a significant challenge for newcomers. Despite possessing valuable skills and qualifications, newcomers may face obstacles such as unrecognized credentials, a lack of Canadian work experience, or unfamiliarity with the job market dynamics. Bridging this gap is essential for economic integration and self-sufficiency.

For those pursuing further education, navigating the Canadian education system can be complex. The recognition of foreign credentials, understanding admission processes, and accessing financial aid pose challenges for many newcomers. Accessible information and support are vital to help them make informed decisions about their educational pathways.

Establishing a stable living situation is a fundamental aspect of settlement. Newcomers often face challenges in finding affordable and suitable housing, leading to uncertainty and stress. Addressing housing insecurity is crucial for providing a sense of stability and security as individuals and families start anew.

Feelings of isolation and loneliness are common challenges for newcomers. Building social networks and connections within the community can be daunting, especially when cultural and language barriers exist. Initiatives that promote community engagement and foster a sense of belonging are essential for the well-being of newcomers.

Navigating the legal and immigration processes can be intricate and overwhelming. Understanding visa requirements, residency applications, and immigration policies requires specialized knowledge. Community organizations play a vital role in providing guidance, legal assistance, and advocacy to help newcomers successfully navigate these complexities.

Accessing healthcare services and understanding the Canadian healthcare system can be challenging for newcomers. Language barriers, unfamiliarity with the system, and limited awareness of available services can impact the health and well-being of individuals and families.

The recognition of prior work experience and skills acquired in the home country is a crucial aspect of successful integration. Many newcomers find it challenging to have their international qualifications recognized in the Canadian job market, hindering their ability to contribute fully to their chosen fields.

Despite Canada's commitment to diversity, newcomers may still face discrimination and stereotyping based on their cultural background or immigration status. Addressing these issues is vital for fostering an inclusive and equitable society.

Newcomers may experience economic disparities, with some facing financial challenges due to initial settlement costs, unemployment, or underemployment. Bridging these economic gaps is essential for ensuring the long-term success and stability of newcomers in Canada.
In conclusion, acknowledging and actively addressing these challenges is paramount for creating a supportive environment that enables newcomers to thrive in Canada. Community organizations, governmental initiatives, and collective efforts play a pivotal role in fostering inclusivity, providing resources, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all individuals seeking a fresh start in the Great White North.
