Role Overview

As a Volunteer Photographer, you will play a crucial role in visually documenting the stories of refugees and immigrants in Canada. Your photography will help bring to life the articles and features in our magazine, capturing the essence of the experiences and emotions of our subjects. You will work closely with our editorial team to create compelling imagery that complements our written content.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with writers, editors, and other contributors to understand the themes and stories being covered in the magazine.
  • Photograph subjects in various settings, including homes, workplaces, schools, community events, and more.
  • Capture candid and posed images that reflect the authenticity and diversity of refugee and immigrant experiences.
  • Edit and retouch photos to meet the magazine’s visual standards.
  • Provide high-resolution images that can be used across digital and print formats.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful approach when interacting with subjects, ensuring their comfort and consent during photography sessions.
  • Ensure all photos are taken with sensitivity to cultural and personal boundaries.
  • Attend editorial meetings and contribute ideas for visual storytelling.

Qualifications

  • Strong photography skills with a portfolio demonstrating a range of styles and techniques.
  • Experience in photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • A passion for storytelling and social causes.
  • Understanding of the unique challenges faced by refugees and immigrants in Canada is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel to different locations for photo assignments.
